Time Management Tips for Online Classes - All of us are busy with our family, work, school, and in general day to day routine, because of which most of us are turning to online learning for further education or to upgrade our skillsets. One main benefit of online learning is time flexibility.
Those of you who have completed an online course before know that it is a challenge to manage your time & actually complete the online course. Some of you might be new to online learning due to the covid-19 pandemic, making this change of online learning can take some time getting used to. However, here are a few tips that will help you manage your time for your online classes.
6 Time Management Tips that Will help Students make the most of Online Classes
- Have a study plan :
When most of us enrol for an online course, we are extremely enthusiastic but over time we all end up procrastinating. To avoid this, you need to plan your schedule ahead of time. You should make a monthly calendar & set some time every day/week (depending on your schedule) for your online course. Ensure that you account for all the work which might include reading the notes, watching the videos, completing the assignments & anything else related to your course.
You should add your assignment deadlines, submissions, and test to your schedule so you can be ready for it. Also, ensure that your online course does not take away time from your immediate duties be it work/college or anything other prior commitments
- Have a study partner :
Take the course with a friend to make it more interesting. For the students who get distracted easily, finishing an online course might seem close to impossible. Taking a course with a friend will increase your chances of completing the course and managing your time as well.
People are most likely to complete the class when they are learning with a friend or colleague. You can also lighten the load if you have a study partner. An example, perhaps your partner does the reading chapter 1 while you're reading chapter two and then you can exchange your knowledge with each other.
- Do not multitask :
Whether you are preparing for an exam, doing an assignment, reading a textbook, researching a power project, or participating in an online forum, it is better if you focus on one thing at a time. Multitasking can decrease your productivity.
If you try to juggle more than two or three things at a time, you might lose your focus. So, it's better if you prioritize your task in the order of their importance. You can create a to-do list, so you organize your tasks better, and you know when you are close to a deadline.
- Block out distraction and set up your study zone :
Studying online can be full of notifications that distract you. Avoid using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media tools when you are studying so you can concentrate better.
Avoid excessive web surfing, video streaming, texting about non-relevant things while studying. When you are studying at home you may have to keep your family members away, turn off your cell phone and TV.
It's better to have a designated area so you can focus on your study. Find a quiet place, equipped with your laptop headphones and reliable internet connection to reduce the amount of time you spend on unnecessary distraction.
- Short term goals :
Completing the online course should be your ultimate goal. However, setting smaller goals will keep you stay focused and help with time management so you can reap great rewards at the end.
Give yourself incentives for completing the short-term goals. You can reward yourself with an episode of your favourite TV series or your favourite meal after the completion of an assignment or a module within a specific time.
This way, you will feel the drive to complete your goals on time. But be realistic, you probably won't be able to complete the entire course or a class within a week no matter how hard you try. You will have other priorities outside the online class which will require your attention too. So, you can set your goals accordingly.
While you are attending your online classes, some days you might have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture; What will be the benefits of completing this online course for you in the future? This will keep you motivated to achieve your short-term goals.
If you are struggling with something and you do not understand you can always ask for help from your study partner, your colleagues, or your online professor. We cannot control or stop time. What we can do is to start managing our time in the best way possible.
