International English Language Testing System popularly known as IELTS is a test to evaluate the English proficiency of the students whose native language is not English.
The scores are required by a candidate to secure admission to universities in UK / Australia / New Zealand and Canada.
IELTS is a paper based test measured on a band of 0-9. It is administrated by University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES), British Council and IDP Education Australia.
IELTS is computer based test for Academic modules.

Academic IELTS is taken by students who are going to the said country for further education.
General IELTS is taken by people who immigrating to the said country to work.
